100 Years of Wedding Cake Designs

100 Years of Wedding Cake Designs

At Wedding Collectibles we are passionate about cake design and cake toppers! We wanted to share with you some of the highlights of how far cake design has come over the past century and fell in love with this video! Which wedding cake designs are your favorite? I think we've got to say 1936 and 2016!

The 1920s

Wedding cake designs often took on the glitz and glam of the roaring 20s era. They were styled with an art deco theme like in The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Icing techniques were complex and expensive. This led to affordable cake mixes being sold so that all couples could have a wedding cake.

The 1930s

Cake toppers became popular, as well as, the Lambeth Method. Lambeth icing is a method of piping rows of icing details that are delicate and meticulous.

The 1940s

Due to the war, cakes were mostly homemade in the 40s and featured very little decorations. Lambeth icing was still popular. Many cake toppers were of a traditional couple with the groom in military dress uniforms.

The 1950s

Fruit cakes with white frosting were very popular. After the war more intricate cake toppers became highly popularized and we started to see more use of fresh flowers as a cake topper.

The 1960s

Multi-tiered and elegant, cakes of the 60s were all about height and extravagance. The versatile “boiled icing” technique rose in popularity.

The 1970s

Multi-tiered cakes were still popular, but the decorations became more detailed. The tiers were typically adorned with ornaments of silver and gold, bells and ribbons, or small edible flowers. The traditional bride and groom cake topper was, and still is, a popular classic choice. Cake decorators started experimenting with buttercream frosting and royal icing was a common choice as it was strong and could support the many tiers of the typical 70s wedding cake.

The 1980s

Dark fruit cake mixtures were very popular in the 80s. Brides wanted a wow factor on their cake, and things like water fountains and pillars were added for dramatic affect. Common elements of wedding cake designs in the 80's were flowers, ribbons and icing decorations.

The 1990s

Sugar paste was back in popularity and so cakes in the 90s were decorated with colorful edibe flowers and other decorations. Cake toppers became more personalized and reflected the bride and groom’s personality, hobbies, or professions.

The 2000s

Wedding cake designs started to be coordinated with the wedding gown and decorations. The icing work became very detailed. Many brides started to incorporate coordinating cupcakes with their wedding cake.

The 2010s

Water color designs make a splash in the 2010s! Cake decorators had fun using washes of pastel colors, applying gold accents, and placing unique shapes marking a contemporary style for the decade.

How to Tell if Your Porcelain Cake Topper is Good Quality

What are some ways to tell if you are buying a good quality porcelain cake topper?
High Quality Porcelain

First off, porcelain is porcelain. There isn't good or bad; just different kinds. When it comes to cake toppers, what you are going to want to look for is how the figurine is made.
  1. Is it Porcelain?: First, you are going to want to check the material the cake topper you are buying is made out of. This will often be in the item description. Some of the most popular materials cake toppers are made of are porcelain, resin, & acrylic.
  2. Look at the hands and ears: Porcelain cake toppers are made from molds. After being used for a long time, molds lose their ability to produce detailed figurines. If the hands and ears look more like blobs or you can't distinguish fingers or the curve of the ear, it means the manufacturer has been using a mold for too long.
  3. The Paint Job: If a maker is not paying attention to the detail, there may be some mess ups with the paint. It would be more obvious with ethnic figurines, but a lower quality porcelain topper may have the paint intended for the skin, on the white wedding dress. This, of course, should not be happening!
  4. It's in the details!!: Some cake toppers are going to beCrystal Details  better than others based solely on the little details. Take the one featured above; part of what makes it so great is the Swarovski crystal that is used as hair accessories and on the wedding band. If a figurine is offering special ornamental motifs like this, you are looking at a porcelain cake topper of higher quality.
  5. Honestly, you are going to get what you pay for: Unless there is an amazing sale, it is likely that the price of the porcelain cake topper is going to reflect the quality of time and attention that is given to that piece. So if you are spending $50 on a cake topper it is going to be worth that $50, just like if you are paying $100 or if you are paying $20.
If you are shopping online, you are not going to be able to tell what the quality of your individual topper is. Keep in mind that the cake toppers featured in the photos are from the very first time the mold is used, and represent the maker's best work. Often, return policies on wedding accessories can be strict, so you are going to want to pay attention to your shop's return policy. At Wedding Collectibles, we sell from a wide range of wedding cake toppers from different manufactures, and do our best to provide you with the best cake toppers, but also provide options to some that may have more affordable prices. If you have your eye on one of the cake toppers we sell, take a look at our return policy by following the link here.

What is the Difference Between Porcelain Cake Toppers and Resin Cake Toppers?

So...What is the Difference Between Porcelain and Resin?

This is a common question at Wedding Collectibles because most wedding cake toppers are going to be made of one or the other. To answer this question I will go over the qualities of both, noting some pros and cons of each. It is important, however, to know that whether you should buy a porcelain cake topper versus a resin cake topper will depend more on what is important to you. Porcelain  Porcelain Cake Topper Porcelain is a ceramic material made similar to the way that glass is made, involving heating or firing of material such as clay.If it breaks, you will notice that the texture of the broken surface will feel powdery, demonstrating that the material is made of smaller materials or grans. However, unless it is dropped or hit with something it isn't going to break. Porcelain is a material that doesn't ware away or in anyway disintegrate. These are known for being a high quality cake topper. Why?
  • Porcelain lasts longer. The color and shape won't fade or distort (unless you drop it and it breaks!)
Like most things, there are some disadvantages to Porcelain cake toppers as well.
  • The major disadvantage is that is can't hold edges very well. What this means is that if the edge or detail is too thin, it will collapse on itself. If you have a porcelain cake topper, you do not need to worry about this happening. This would only occur while making the figurine, meaning that it limits the kind of details you are going to find in the cake topper.
  • Expensive Material. High quality porcelain cake toppers do tend to be more expensive, but not necessarily out of budget. If you are looking for a long lasting keepsake, porcelain is well worth the money!
Resin  Resin cake toppers Resin or Stone Resin is an increasingly popular material for wedding cake toppers and figurines. Why?
  • Resin can be intricately detailed, meaning that your cake topper can have more detail.
  • It can be cheaper than porcelain, but still maintain a similar look.* (See exemption in Cons below!)
Some Cons for Resin cake toppers
  • Resin actually yellows over time, so if you buy a resin cake topper you may find the white to be looking a little less...white. If you display it in an area that has a lot of sun, your cake topper will easily be yellowed within a year. Whether it sits in the sun or not, it will yellow, the sun just speeds up the process. This is why if you plan on your cake topper being a keep sake that you will have around for a lifetime or more, you may want to look at something other then Resin.
  • The cost is increasing! Resin is most basically a high grade plastic. For a long time this meant that the cake toppers could be made at a lower cost, but the cost of this material is going up. Making the cost difference between Resin and Porcelain to not be so much of a difference.
You will find wedding cake toppers made of both materials because you can get a high quality cake toppers with each. Whether one is better than the other will depend on what you want to focus on. If you are looking for a top of the heap porcelain cake topper, Lenox is known for producing high quality porcelain. Then, one of the most popular makers of resin cake toppers and figurines that you may be familiar with is Willow Tree. Wedding Collectibles carries both of the above brands and produces our own. We work diligently to produce the best cake toppers at an affordable price. You can trust that affordable, in our case, will not mean sloppy work.

If you have any more questions on these difference please feel free to post below or give us a call!!

Musts for a Beach Themed Wedding

Musts for a Beach Themed WeddingWhy a Beach Wedding is an Affordable Option

Summer is just around the corner, and if you are living in sunny California, it may even feel like summer now! If you are newly engaged and planning for a Summer wedding, you may be considering a romantic wedding on the beach. Even though the beach wedding style is often considered laid back and relaxed, there is still a lot of planning and careful touches from how to do your hair for that beach humidity to keeping those centerpieces from looking like a tourist shop ( unless that is the way you want to go!) that you will need to pay attention too. Here are some items to help you keep your beach wedding theme cohesive, classy, and full of that summer love'n! 1. Lets start with you!

Wedding Collectibles - Aqua Bead Foot Jewelry

When a lot of brides dream up a beach wedding they think of effortless curls, soft flowing bridal gowns, and their bare feet in the sand. Now, think back to the last time you were at the beach. What did you feet look like at the end of the day?? Not exactly the cleanest look? There are three things we would like to suggest for your barefoot wedding plans. First, get a a pedicure! Might as well start with your absolute best foot forward and start off with clean, manicured toes. Second, have wet wipes available . This way after the ceremony and before your reception you can wipe down your feet. This would be particularly important if you do not have a lot of time in-between the ceremony and reception.IMPORTANT: Don't wipe you feet down and then stick them directly back into the sand: You need to wait till they are completely dry again or else you will just have sand stuck to your feet! And lastly, bare feet does not necessarily mean you feet must be 100% bare. In other words, accessorize with some bling! Foot jewelry works wonderfully with a beach themed wedding because it adds to that easy beauty and almost bohemian tone that the soft waves and sand invite. The foot jewelry pictured above, our "Pearl and Rhinestone", or our "Shell" foot jewelry would be a perfect addition to your beach wedding. 2. For the Ceremony: Wedding Collectibles - Beautiful Mother of Pearl Shell Ring Pillow You won't need too much beach decor if you are having your wedding ceremony at the beach because ....welll...what more do you need than the rolling waves, soft sands, and sunset in the background? What you can do is use beach themed items for the ceremony. For example you can have sea shells or smooth rocks line your aisle way instead of flower petals and starfish will always add a unique and romantic touch. Also, you can add a seaside touch to the traditional items in a ceremony such as the ring bearer pillow, the unity candle, or for the sand pouring. 3. At the Reception: Wedding Collectibles - Tropical Breeze Cake Topper There are going to be a lot of ways to incorporate your seaside wedding theme at your wedding reception, but one that you really cant skip on is the wedding cake and wedding cake topper. If you have a beach theme running throughout and then you have a plain Jane wedding cake with a traditional wedding cake topper it will have the similar look as if someone wore a business suit to go to enjoy the beach. Plus, a beach theme provides you with a fun opportunity to get creative with your wedding cake topper.

Gag-Me-With-a-Spoon Cutsie Wedding Cake Toppers

Showered with Love Couple Figurine

Are you that couple that just can't help but talk in sweet little voices to each other, sneak little kisses, and are holding hands or cuddling so much that your friends pretend to be joking about not being able to stand being around you? Do you have so many pet names for each other that you have moved way passed sweetheart and have entered a world where pumpkin butt is a term of endearment? If so, then you will want to capture that lovey-dovey-ness in your wedding cake topper because your cake topper is not only for your wedding, but is a keepsake that can represent your love for each other for the many years to come. Wedding Collectibles has so many different types of cake toppers available, but some of the best wedding cake toppers we have are our too cute to stand cake toppers, including the "Showered with Love" cake topper that is featured above. "Picture Perfect" Couple Figurine

The "Picture Perfect" couple wedding cake topper is another fun cutsie cake topper option. Part of what makes this so adorable is its play off of the trend of taking wedding photos or engagement photos with a frame (the whole frame within a frame effect). If you are doing the framed them photos then this cake topper would be perfect! Plus, as it allows for your cake topper to be more of a sweet moment captured, rather than a stoic image of a bride and groom "The Look of Love" Bride and Groom Couple Figurine

If you are looking for a twist on the traditional wedding cake topper, the "Look of Love" would be the perfect choice. This cake topper is unique in that instead of the usual bride and groom standing side bye side, you have a bride and groom sitting together in one of those soft and intimate moments where you don't worry about those friends that are making kissy noises or are pretending to throw up because all that matters is looking into his deep dark brown eyes and hearing him whisper "I love you". What is really great about this cake topper is how natural and unposed it seems. It really could be that moment at the end of the night, when the bride and groom think that finally no one is watching and they just sink into themselves.

There really is a lot of freedom in the choice of what kind of wedding cake topper you choose to use, so take your time in deciding on that perfect wedding cake topper that truly captures the love and personality of your relationship.

The Best Flowers to Accompany a Traditional Wedding Cake Topper

The Best Flowers to Accompany a Traditional Wedding Cake Topper

Wedding Collectibles Caucasian Couple Figurine

If you have had your heart set on a traditional bride and groom cake topper or perhaps plan to use the same one your parents used , but you also really like the idea of flowers on your cake don't think you can't do both! You just want to make sure you don't let the flowers over power or otherwise hide your cake topper and you don't want the floral design to be so insignificant that it is like there is nothing there at all.

Sunflower & Burlap Wedding Cake

Too Big

Sunflowers, Peonies, and Garden Roses are some wedding flower favorites that can look great on a cake, but if you want to have a cake topper too, these would be overbearing and would take away from the cake topper you so carefully picked out. If you find smaller sunflowers, it could work, but they are still a really bold flower choice, so you will have to play with it.

  Memento's Designs TooSmall

Flowers like baby's breath could end up being too small. The above cake looks great, but the flowers are such a small element that unless you do do something where the cake is colored, the flowers won't make much of an impact. If you want the flowers on the cake to be a complete side note, then these might work for you, but if you want flowers to be a major part of the cake's design that works with the cake topper, these just won't cut it. Baby's breath really is just a filler flower, It is the soft stuff that goes in-between the pretty stuff and they just don't quite make enough of an impact to go on a wedding cake.

Spring Wedding Flower - Lily of the ValleyJust Right

The lily of the valley flower is a great option for a cake with flowers and a cake topper, Like the baby's breath, the flowers are small, but not overly small. This allows for you to have a floral cake design that frames a wedding cake topper without over doing it. Other flowers that can fit this just right category are daisies and lilacs.

3 Options For the Fantasy Wedding Cake Topper

Fantasy Wedding Cake Toppers

Fantasy Lovers Wedding Cake TopperA lot of people consider true love to be a dream and fantasy, so when that dream comes true, you may be thinking of developing a wedding theme surrounding that idea of fantasy in order to symbolize the fantastic nature of your true love reality. If so, you may want to consider the following cake topper options that emphasize a fairy tale world or storybook romance, as well as pinpoint people in history or characters in literature that can stand in for the crazy big and completely committed love that you and your fiance have!
