- Is it Porcelain?: First, you are going to want to check the material the cake topper you are buying is made out of. This will often be in the item description. Some of the most popular materials cake toppers are made of are porcelain, resin, & acrylic.
- Look at the hands and ears: Porcelain cake toppers are made from molds. After being used for a long time, molds lose their ability to produce detailed figurines. If the hands and ears look more like blobs or you can't distinguish fingers or the curve of the ear, it means the manufacturer has been using a mold for too long.
- The Paint Job: If a maker is not paying attention to the detail, there may be some mess ups with the paint. It would be more obvious with ethnic figurines, but a lower quality porcelain topper may have the paint intended for the skin, on the white wedding dress. This, of course, should not be happening!
- It's in the details!!: Some cake toppers are going to be better than others based solely on the little details. Take the one featured above; part of what makes it so great is the Swarovski crystal that is used as hair accessories and on the wedding band. If a figurine is offering special ornamental motifs like this, you are looking at a porcelain cake topper of higher quality.
- Honestly, you are going to get what you pay for: Unless there is an amazing sale, it is likely that the price of the porcelain cake topper is going to reflect the quality of time and attention that is given to that piece. So if you are spending $50 on a cake topper it is going to be worth that $50, just like if you are paying $100 or if you are paying $20.

So...What is the Difference Between Porcelain and Resin? This is a common question at Wedding Collectibles because most wedding cake toppers are going to be made of one or the other. To answer this question I will go over the qualities of both, noting some pros and cons of each. It is important, however, to know that whether you should buy a porcelain cake topper versus a resin cake topper will depend more on what is important to you. Porcelain Porcelain is a ceramic material made similar to the way that glass is made, involving heating or firing of material such as clay.If it breaks, you will notice that the texture of the broken surface will feel powdery, demonstrating that the material is made of smaller materials or grans. However, unless it is dropped or hit with something it isn't going to break. Porcelain is a material that doesn't ware away or in anyway disintegrate. These are known for being a high quality cake topper. Why?
- Porcelain lasts longer. The color and shape won't fade or distort (unless you drop it and it breaks!)
- The major disadvantage is that is can't hold edges very well. What this means is that if the edge or detail is too thin, it will collapse on itself. If you have a porcelain cake topper, you do not need to worry about this happening. This would only occur while making the figurine, meaning that it limits the kind of details you are going to find in the cake topper.
- Expensive Material. High quality porcelain cake toppers do tend to be more expensive, but not necessarily out of budget. If you are looking for a long lasting keepsake, porcelain is well worth the money!
- Resin can be intricately detailed, meaning that your cake topper can have more detail.
- It can be cheaper than porcelain, but still maintain a similar look.* (See exemption in Cons below!)
- Resin actually yellows over time, so if you buy a resin cake topper you may find the white to be looking a little less...white. If you display it in an area that has a lot of sun, your cake topper will easily be yellowed within a year. Whether it sits in the sun or not, it will yellow, the sun just speeds up the process. This is why if you plan on your cake topper being a keep sake that you will have around for a lifetime or more, you may want to look at something other then Resin.
- The cost is increasing! Resin is most basically a high grade plastic. For a long time this meant that the cake toppers could be made at a lower cost, but the cost of this material is going up. Making the cost difference between Resin and Porcelain to not be so much of a difference.
If you have any more questions on these difference please feel free to post below or give us a call!!

With each season comes a new set of wedding themes and styles, and Wedding Collectibles has the perfect favors, wedding accessories, and darling wedding cake toppers to help you fit your theme and your season.
Twitterpation Season Spring has been the "IT" season for weddings for....I don't even know how long. To be a June bride is like entering into a secret club of getting everything you ever wanted. If the Spring bride is you, congratulations you have hit the "It" season mark. You might decide to look into vintage, floral, butterfly, or shabby chic wedding themes. Each of these fit nicely with the colors and flowers that come with the Spring. Everything should be light, smile-ready, and focused on new and butterflies-in-the-stomach love. Cake Toppers like the adorable "Leg Pop" one above will help you reach that twitterpated mood of spring because it embodies that same lightness and new energy of romance.
Sand-between-the-toes Season Summertime equals sunshine, warm nights, starlight picnics, and summer love! Summer love may indicate that fleeting love, but let's go with the Grease version where the summer lovers end up back together happily ever after. Summer is one of the funnest seasons in that it is a perfect dating season and generates ideas and the option to go to fun theme parks, circuses, to go see fireworks, on boat rides, hiking, fishing, camping, and all sorts of outdoor activities that either end or begin with you holding hands. Each of these summer activities can inspire unique wedding themes; For example, the circus or perhaps a festival with carnival like games can translate wonderfully into a creative and active wedding reception. Playful cake toppers like the wedding cake topper of a bride and groom cuddled lounging in the sand is perfect addition to a summer wedding because it acts a a cut out of what those long summer days and nights entail: Fun, romance, and dreaming of forever.
Blustery Days Season Fall can sometimes be a season that gets skipped over as an in between season that just acts as a separator between the summer sun and winter snow and rain, but it is such a beautiful season that it deserves to have its day: Your wedding day! Fall is a season of warm, rich, and vibrant color schemes. You can use reds, purples, oranges and any other color that a green leaf turns into at the season change. The Willow Tree cake topper is an absolute perfect choice for a fall wedding cake topper. It's earth tones and simple carving creates a tone that just says fall. This would work with vintage, country, shabby chic, storybook, and fairy tale wedding themes.
Sleigh Bells Season We have talked about what makes a winter wedding great before, but to recap, it is uber romantic. Winter often equals cuddling close, mistletoe kisses, and whispering I love you along side the soft fall of snow. With winter being so magical, you will want a wedding cake topper that will equal that feeling. The above "Glass Heart Dancing" cake topper works great for winter in that the glass and crisp white implies a winter wonderland and the couple dancing creates that feeling of intimacy and romance.
Gag-Me-With-a-Spoon Cutsie Wedding Cake Toppers
Are you that couple that just can't help but talk in sweet little voices to each other, sneak little kisses, and are holding hands or cuddling so much that your friends pretend to be joking about not being able to stand being around you? Do you have so many pet names for each other that you have moved way passed sweetheart and have entered a world where pumpkin butt is a term of endearment? If so, then you will want to capture that lovey-dovey-ness in your wedding cake topper because your cake topper is not only for your wedding, but is a keepsake that can represent your love for each other for the many years to come. Wedding Collectibles has so many different types of cake toppers available, but some of the best wedding cake toppers we have are our too cute to stand cake toppers, including the "Showered with Love" cake topper that is featured above.
The "Picture Perfect" couple wedding cake topper is another fun cutsie cake topper option. Part of what makes this so adorable is its play off of the trend of taking wedding photos or engagement photos with a frame (the whole frame within a frame effect). If you are doing the framed them photos then this cake topper would be perfect! Plus, as it allows for your cake topper to be more of a sweet moment captured, rather than a stoic image of a bride and groom
If you are looking for a twist on the traditional wedding cake topper, the "Look of Love" would be the perfect choice. This cake topper is unique in that instead of the usual bride and groom standing side bye side, you have a bride and groom sitting together in one of those soft and intimate moments where you don't worry about those friends that are making kissy noises or are pretending to throw up because all that matters is looking into his deep dark brown eyes and hearing him whisper "I love you". What is really great about this cake topper is how natural and unposed it seems. It really could be that moment at the end of the night, when the bride and groom think that finally no one is watching and they just sink into themselves.
There really is a lot of freedom in the choice of what kind of wedding cake topper you choose to use, so take your time in deciding on that perfect wedding cake topper that truly captures the love and personality of your relationship.
The Best Flowers to Accompany a Traditional Wedding Cake Topper
If you have had your heart set on a traditional bride and groom cake topper or perhaps plan to use the same one your parents used , but you also really like the idea of flowers on your cake don't think you can't do both! You just want to make sure you don't let the flowers over power or otherwise hide your cake topper and you don't want the floral design to be so insignificant that it is like there is nothing there at all.
Sunflowers, Peonies, and Garden Roses are some wedding flower favorites that can look great on a cake, but if you want to have a cake topper too, these would be overbearing and would take away from the cake topper you so carefully picked out. If you find smaller sunflowers, it could work, but they are still a really bold flower choice, so you will have to play with it.
Flowers like baby's breath could end up being too small. The above cake looks great, but the flowers are such a small element that unless you do do something where the cake is colored, the flowers won't make much of an impact. If you want the flowers on the cake to be a complete side note, then these might work for you, but if you want flowers to be a major part of the cake's design that works with the cake topper, these just won't cut it. Baby's breath really is just a filler flower, It is the soft stuff that goes in-between the pretty stuff and they just don't quite make enough of an impact to go on a wedding cake.
The lily of the valley flower is a great option for a cake with flowers and a cake topper, Like the baby's breath, the flowers are small, but not overly small. This allows for you to have a floral cake design that frames a wedding cake topper without over doing it. Other flowers that can fit this just right category are daisies and lilacs.
If your faith is at the center of your life, then you may decide to make it a prominent element of your wedding. Traditionally, the wedding ceremony is tied as a religious ceremony, and it is not uncommon to find religious elements in the couples wedding vows, the ceremony officiator, and in traditions such lighting prayer candles or the breaking of the glass. Having a religiously themed wedding cake topper is a simple and elegant way to carry over that reverence of your religious wedding ceremony to your wedding reception.
The wedding cake topper on the left is a great example of what Wedding Collectibles has to offer its costumers that are looking for something to embody their faith at their wedding. It features the symbolic wedding bands, rose and pearl accents, a bible and a bible verse. Simple and Elegant. A similar cake topper available is our "Love Verse Bible with Doves". This cake topper has that added symbolism of the white dove that is a symbol in the bible of the Holy Spirit.
The Wedding Cake Topper is the Symbol You Choose to Represent You
If you want the traditional blushing bride and groom figurine wedding cake topper, the one like the figure above would be a beautiful addition to your artfully designed wedding cake. We've said this before, but we will say it again because it is essential to realize; The wedding cake topper is representation of the essential element of you and your groom. It acts as a stand in, a symbol, of who you are as a couple. That is why couples that are united in their playful and dreamer nature will choose a fantasy or fairy tale cake topper, and the adventurous or outgoing couple ends up with a cake topper like the motorcycle "Get Away" cake topper or the "Super Spy" figurine cake topper. For couples that center themselves in their faith, finding that cake topper that embodies that faith, that respect, trust, and reverence. Try our "My Beloved" or the "Precious Moments Wedding Cross" wedding cake topper to help you make your wedding dreams come true.

Fantasy Wedding Cake Toppers
A lot of people consider true love to be a dream and fantasy, so when that dream comes true, you may be thinking of developing a wedding theme surrounding that idea of fantasy in order to symbolize the fantastic nature of your true love reality. If so, you may want to consider the following cake topper options that emphasize a fairy tale world or storybook romance, as well as pinpoint people in history or characters in literature that can stand in for the crazy big and completely committed love that you and your fiance have!
Fairy tale: Fairies and Princesses: Depending on what direction you are taking your fairy tale theme will determine whether you will want to go the fairy or princess route. If you are hoping to emphasize the ideas of magic, fantasy, and the spectacular, then you will probably want to direct your attention to fairy cake toppers. If you desire to capture that intense and immediate love that turns up in fairy tales about princesses, then you will want to go with a prince and princess wedding cake topper. Within the princess wedding cake topper option, you could also use a castle wedding cake topper. The castle is a classic symbol of that happily ever after and could act as a perfect example of your entering the ever after together.
Great Loves Through History: Perhaps you feel the best way to express the love you feel for you fiance is by comparing it to the great (although some are seen as tragic) loves throughout history. This lends to an exciting wedding theme with creative centerpieces, a rich connection to sentiment, and the immortalization of your love. It is almost like you would be creating a love hall of fame that includes you and your soon to be spouse.
Epic Loves in Literature: If you have a love of literature, this option is perfect for you! This would send a similar message as the historical cake toppers, but can also include the sense of immediacy and intensity as the fairy tale cake toppers. You could site the epic and classic loves of Romeo and Juliet, Mr.Darcy and Elizabeth, Jane Eyre and Mr. Rochester, or when entering the world of fantasy, the love of Aragorn and Arwen.
