How To Cut Your Wedding Cake

On your wedding day, not only are you going to marry your best friend, but you are also going to get the opportunity to participate in wedding traditions that have been practiced by millions of people from all walks of life. Really, one of the things that makes the tradition of a wedding so special is its creation of community, its link through generations and for some traditions even continents. It really is a beautiful thing.

If you don't have someone to show you the ropes, you might feel at a loss when approaching these time old traditions. So, lets take a look at some of the things that you should do when cutting your wedding cake.

How to Cut Your Wedding Cake

First, make sure you have all the right tools. 

You are going to want to have a thin and sharp knife. It can also be a good idea to make sure the knife is warm. You can do this by running it under hot water right before the cake cutting ceremony. You will also need a server, so it may be a good idea to purchase a serving set if you are wanting something that will work aesthetically with your wedding.

Next, pay attention to where you are cutting the cake.

I've heard so many times from couples saying that they cut into the wrong part of the cake. So, where do you not cut? You don't cut on the top tier. The top tier is meant to be saved by the bride and groom and eaten on their one year anniversary. now, if you are serving cup cakes at your wedding like the couple pictured above, it may be unavoidable to cut into that tier. But if you can avoid it, don't cut into it. Instead, you will want to make a small cut on the bottom tier.

When you actually make the cut, start by cutting the knife straight down through the cake and then pulling it out at an angle toward the outer edge. During the cake cutting ceremony, both the bride and groom should have their hand on the knife. The idea is that you both would control the knife and cut together. If you are nervous, however, you can choose for one of you to control the knife, and the other to simply have their hand their. You will want to be sure to clean off the knife before it is used again, but don't worry about that during the cutting ceremony.

Once you have made the cut, use the server to place it on a small plate. 

For feeding each other the bite of cake you can either use a fork or you fingers. Those that use their fingers are more likely to smash the cake in the others face. You can either take turns feeding each other a bite or do so simultaneously. Be sure to share a kiss after!
